Hello Members,
We are fully into the Fall/Winter season and beginning to reap the benefits of our work. From broccoli to cauliflower and lettuce to peas, the crops are bountiful this year. Here are a couple of reminders and issues:
DECEMBER WORK PARTY: Remember that 2 of the 4 required hours are required to be performed or paid for by December 31. If the 2 hours are not completed by December 31, you will automatically be given an extra 2 hours for required community service for a total of 6 hours due by April 30, 2025. Hope to see you at 7:15AM on DECEMBER 7th. Please RSVP to this email if you plan to attend. It helps us to make the assignments and how much work we can expect to get done. Remember not to work in your plot until 9:30 am during the Work Party. If you are unable to make this work party, please contact me at lbcga.president@gmail.com. Other assignments outside the Saturday Work Party can be arranged.
ORCHARD WORK PARTY: The Orchard work parties are usually every Tuesday from 3-5pm and are by appointment only by signing up at the Gazebo. Also, individual appointments are available by contacting Alan Coles at: lbcg.orchard@gmail.com Your help is greatly appreciated.
TOMATOES , PEPPERS & EGGPLANTS: All tomatoes, peppers and eggplants must be completely removed through March 1. We have seen many plots that still have them. I’ve sent friendly reminders to plots, with peppers, eggplants, and tomatoes. We will review all plots again on December 1st to check for compliance and all plots to be fully planted.
SE TOILET: Due to problems caused by homeless people, we will be placing a lock on the toilet in the southeast corner (by the green storage container). The combination will be DIRT. When locking it back up, please put the lock on so the combination line is facing you. It’s very difficult if it’s backwards. We hope this will be only temporary. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
HOURS: The hours at the garden are dawn to dusk. Please don’t stay after dark. It’s a safety issue.
STORAGE AREA: When taking or removing anything, please keep the area neat. No Junk!
ENTERING PLOTS: Please remember you SHALL NOT enter anyone else’s or empty plots. Plants and equipment have been reported as missing. If theft is determined, membership will be immediately terminated.
HOSES: The cost of hoses has gone up. When stretching out the hose, please don’t tug hard as it ruins the end. When replacing a hose, each corner will pay $15.00 each. Please be careful.
SPEEDING IN THE GARDEN: It’s 5 mph everywhere in the garden. Correction notices will be given to those not observing the rules for speeding.
OVERGROWN ROSEMARY, LAVENDER & OTHER PERENNIAL PLANTS: We recently have had to get strong men to remove extremely overgrown rosemary and lavender plants in several plots. These plants are supposed to be cut down to a height and width of no more than 3 feet. If the trunk of any plant is larger than 2 inches in diameter and woody, remove the plant and start with a new one.
TARO ROOT: It has been brought to our attention the Taro Root leaf stalks are succulent and require an excessive amount of water. Succulents in any form shall not be grown in the garden. Please remove them from your plot.
FOOD BANK DONATIONS: As we begin reaping veggies from our winter gardens, don’t forget to donate some to the food bank as there is great need at the Long Beach Mission and other charities we support.
BOARD MEETING: The next board meeting is Monday, December 2nd at 6:30pm by Zoom. If you are interested in attending, please reply to this email with your name, plot # and email address to send a zoom invitation link.
HAPPY HOLIDAYS FROM THE BOARD OF THE LB COMMUNITY GARDEN – let’s make 2025 a bountiful year for all!
