Hello Members,

We are fully into the Fall/Winter season and beginning to reap the benefits of our work.  From broccoli to cauliflower and lettuce to peas, the crops are bountiful this year.  Here are a couple of reminders and issues:

DECEMBER WORK PARTY:  Remember that 2 of the 4 required hours are required to be performed or paid for by December 31. If the 2 hours are not completed by Dec 31, you will automatically be given an extra 2 hours for required community service for a total of 6 hours due by April 30, 2024.  Hope to see you at 7:15AM on DECEMBER 2nd. Please RSVP to this email if you plan to attend. It helps us to make the assignments and how much work we can expect to get done. Remember no working in your plot until 9:30 am on work party.

If you are unable to make this work party, please contact me at me at gregmarcotte56@gmail.com

ORCHARD WORK PARTY:

The Orchard work parties are usually every Tuesday from 3-5pm  and are by appointment only by signing up at the Gazebo. Also, individual appointments are available by contacting Alan Coles at: lbcg.orchard@gmail.com Your help is greatly appreciated.

TOMATOES , PEPPERS & EGGPLANTS: All tomatoes, peppers and eggplants must be completely removed through March 1.  We have seen many plots that still have them. We will send friendly reminders to plots, with peppers, eggplants, and tomatoes. We will review all plots again on Dec. 5 to check for compliance and all plots to be fully planted.

SPEEDING IN THE GARDEN:

It’s 5 mph everywhere in the garden. Correction notices will be given to those not observing the rules for speeding.

OVERGROWN ROSEMARY, LAVENDER & OTHER PERENNIAL PLANTS

We recently have had to get strong men to remove extremely overgrown rosemary and lavender plants in several plots.  These plants are supposed to be cut down to a height and width of no more than 3 feet.  If the trunk of your plant is larger than 2 inches in diameter and woody, remove the plant and start with a new one.

 FOOD BANK DONATIONS

As we begin reaping veggies from our winter gardens, don’t forget to donate some to the food bank as there is great need at the Long Beach Mission and other charities we support.

FRUIT DISAPPEARING

Unfortunately, there has been fruit disappearing from the orchard. We are not sure if it’s a member or someone from outside. If you see anyone in the orchard other than Alan, Nancy Alperin, and Barbara Paul and other pre-approved volunteers. Please take note, get a picture and email to lbcg.orchard@mail.com  It appears to be someone arriving in early afternoons and hiding behind the trees.

BOARD MEETING

The next board meeting is Monday, November 27th at 6:30pm by Zoom. If you are interested in attending, please reply to this email with your name, plot # and email address to send a zoom invitation link.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS FROM THE BOARD OF THE LB COMMUNITY GARDEN – let’s make 2024 a bountiful year for all!
